Holiday Cash Crunch – 6 Ways to Save Money
There’s nothing like the holidays to cause stress.
If you have a heavy debt load, Christmas can create anxiety. You may want to consider refinancing your debts if the thought of having to buy gifts and seasonal extras feels overwhelming.
If your debt load is manageable, look at ways to keep your stress levels, and your budget, inline. Here are six of my favorites:
- Shop with cash (or debit). By using only money you have available, you avoid credit cards. If you must use your credit cards plan to pay them off when the bill comes, or at the least, use the one with the lowest interest rate.
- Make a list of who you are shopping for and what you will get them. This prevents impulse buying and allows you to watch sales to buy the perfect gift at a great price.
- Consider homemade gifts like baking or preserves. One year I did “cookie mix in a jar”. I layered all of the dry ingredients in the jar and attached a recipe for the “wet” items. When the Christmas baking runs out these make a quick way to bake up cookies for lunches. The mom on your list will love it!
- Do your brothers / sisters / parents need a gift? Get everyone to agree to buy only for the kids. If that won’t work, have the adults draw names so that each person only buys just one gift at a set a price limit.
- Christmas parties can turn hilarious with a change in gift giving. Instead of bringing new gifts, have guests bring something from their home wrapped up and ready to give!
- Tell friends and family that in lieu of gifts you will be donating to the Food Bank, Christmas Bureau, Salvation Army, Stocking Fund or another charity. It’s a great way to give to those who don’t have the means to celebrate.
Christmas is a time for food, family, fun and celebrating. Find ways to make the holidays work within your means and you’ll rest easier come January.
